Church Council Statement: How We Will Respond to Events that Impact Our Neighbors

In response to ongoing events in our country, the Glenn UMC Church Council, at its meeting on March 23, 2025, unanimously adopted the following statement to make clear how Glenn will respond to events that impact any of our neighbors.

Our country is facing an overwhelming onslaught of laws, actions, rulings, and orders that are adversely impacting the human rights, dignity, safety, and livelihood of millions of our fellow residents. Inspired by the Social Principles of The UMC, which state that “our involvement in political systems is rooted in the Gospel imperative to love our neighbors, to do justice, and to care for the vulnerable”, and empowered by the Book of Discipline to set goals for Glenn Memorial UMC, we, the Glenn Church Council, commit Glenn UMC to the following:

We will resist any effort to use the Christian faith to justify these or similar laws, actions, rulings, or orders.

We will never turn away when those for whom our faith calls us to care and seek justice are being harmed or threatened with harm.

We will speak boldly in defense of the immigrant, the poor, and the intentionally marginalized.

We will not be silent in the face of efforts to exclude or punish people based on their race, religion, abilities, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

We will take seriously our charge from God to care for our planet and all its creatures.

We will stand up for truth, ethics, science, and justice.

Our actions and our words will be guided by our Biblical values and by our understanding that all people are children of God and that we are called by Christ to care for all of our neighbors.
