Annual Conference of The Hymn Society at Emory

Sunday July 14 - Wednesday July 17

The Hymn Society’s annual conference, entitled ”Without Limits: Singing the Congregation’s Song” will soon take place at Emory. Glenn Memorial is the site of two public events as part of this conference: first, on Sunday, July 14 at 4pm, Ukranian organist Viktor Billa will offer an organ recital on our Casavant organ. The next evening, on Monday, July 15 at 7:30pm, Dr. Alisha Lola Jones will lead a Hymn Festival based on “The Seasonality of Black Sacred Music Education.” Both events will be in the Sanctuary and are free to attend.

Choirs

The Chancel Choir
Age Level: College through Senior Adult
Rehearsals: Wednesdays, 7:00 - 9:00pm in the Sanctuary
Directors: Michael Dauterman and Käthe Wright Kaufman

The Chancel Choir, composed of a mix of amateurs and professional musicians, strives to offer a high quality of musical leadership at the 11AM Worship Service, while holding the core value of being warm and welcoming to people of all ability levels. Its principal role is to provide vocal leadership for worship at the 11:00 a.m. service on Sunday mornings. The choir also presents special concerts for the Atlanta community. Men’s and Women’s Ensembles are formed from the Chancel Choir for special musical offerings throughout the year. Watch past musical offerings on our Glenn Church YouTube Channel.

 

Primi Cantores (Early Singers)
Age Level: Youth through Adult
Rehearsals: Not currently meeting - contact Michael with interest!

Primi Cantores sings for Glenn's 8:30 a.m. worship service and rehearses just before the service at 8:00 a.m. This smaller chamber choir is blessed to sing in the rich acoustics and beautiful architecture of The Little Chapel. Everyone, regardless of experience, is welcome to sing in this welcoming group!

Youth Handbell Choir
Age Level: 6th through 12th grades
Rehearsals: Not currently meeting - contact Michael with interest!

Formed in 2020 out of the desire to continue to make music while unable to sing, this new-to-Glenn ensemble welcomes youth from 6th to 12th grade to participate in an exciting and communal form of music-making. The handbell choir offers music periodically throughout the program year and rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 5-6pm. Ringers learn the basics of reading music, ringing handbells, and extended techniques while preparing music for worship services throughout the year. Everyone, regardless of ringing experience, is welcome! 

Youth Choir
Age Level: 6th through 12th grades
Rehearsals: Beginning August 20, Sundays, 5:45-6:45pm, Room 208
Director: Käthe Wright Kaufman

The Youth Choir sings a wide variety of sacred classic, folk and modern anthems, making extensive use of accompanying instruments. Singers learn of worship leadership and advanced choral disciplines and perform often in services. The teenagers have fun, lead worship, give concerts, and go on summer choir tours.

 

Children’s Covenant Choir 
Age Level: 1st through 5th grades
Rehearsals: Beginning September 10, Sundays, 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m in Room 419
Director: Dr. Katie Woolf

The Covenant Choir welcomes all first through fifth graders who love to sing. Rehearsals focus on having fun while learning church music and musical concepts as well as providing opportunities for musical, social and cognitive growth through movement, singing, playing instruments and musical games.  The children develop skills and confidence as they lead worship through singing several times a year, including Lessons and Carols during Advent, Christmas Eve service, and Children’s Sabbath. Followed by Children’s Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Masks encouraged during the COVID19 pandemic.

  

Cherub Choir
Age Level: Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Rehearsals: Beginning September 10, Sundays, 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. in Room 405
Director: Mary Lindsey Lewis

The Cherub Choir is a preparatory choir for children in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The focus is on developing a love for music and singing in a developmentally appropriate way through movement and games. Though the focus is not on performance, the Cherub Choir presents the Nativity Program each year in December and the children are invited to sing as a part of Children’s Sabbath and Scout Sunday each February. Followed by Children’s Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Masks encouraged during the COVID19 pandemic.


 

The Music Fund

The Music Fund helps to support special projects in Glenn’s music program, including the participation of guest musicians in worship and concert.  Among these is our Choral Scholar program, which provides stipends for local college students to sing with the Chancel Choir. Read more about our current Emory Choral Scholars. We are grateful to donors to the Music Fund for so generously supporting music in our congregational life. Tax deductible contributions may be made via check, payable to Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, designated for The Music Fund.
