Words from Westmoreland: The Long Weekend

It’s the long weekend that changes everything.

It begins on Thursday at a table with Jesus.  Now, Jesus spent lots of time at tables with lots of people, all kinds of people, from respected members of society to those the respected couldn’t abide.  But this Thursday get-together is reserved for his closest friends, so you’re guaranteed a spot.  He loves you.  You’re invited.

Friday will be quite different, the crowd large, Jesus’ friends scarce.  We’ll keep a safe distance, you and I, listening to the story unfold, trying to make sense of it all.  Love goes as far as it has to go.  Love can hurt, can be downright ugly.  But it’s always beautiful.

Saturday is a free day, or maybe I should say a day of waiting.  Do as you wish.  Go where you want.  But listen closely.  If you allow yourself, you might notice in the normal noise of the weekend a stillness.  Creation begins in stillness.  We wait.

Then, Sunday, and stillness becomes singing.  Love wins.  We’ll get together and remind each other.  Love wins.  The sun rises on a new creation, and you and I are a part of that—Resurrection, life where there was death, a way that is life eternal.  The weekend that begins with love at the table ends with love beside an empty tomb.  What a strange story it is.  What a strange people we are.  We know love.
