Caring Tips from the Environmental CommitteeLights off for Earth Hour, March 27, starting at 8:30 pm. Turn out and take action. Let's turn the lights off on pollution and climate change. For more information on how you can do your part to create a cleaner, safer, more secure future, visit www.myearthhour.org.
Did you know that the average number of plastic bags consumed every minute around the world is roughly 1 MILLION per MINUTE? Of that number, only 1 percent will actually be recycled, while the rest will either end up in landfills or worse, out in nature or in the ocean. What can you do? Keep cloth/fiber bags in your car so there's no forgetting them when shopping! (Source: www.care2.org)
Did you know that PARABENS, a common element in shampoos, soaps, lotions, etc. have a possible link to breast cancer? Choose hair and skin care products that are labeled PARABEN-FREE....there are several inexpensive options to choose from at everyday grocery, drug, and retail stores. (Source: Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life, by Ed Begley, Jr....available in the Glenn Library!)
What's fresh in the garden this week? Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a win-win situation where you support local farmers and they provide you with fresh organic produce. There are many CSAs in Atlanta and the time to subscribe for the season is now. Two with close dropoff points near Glenn are TaylOrganic Farm and Farmers Fresh CSAs. Check the Glenn Environmental Committee web page for more CSAs. Learn about the benefits of local, organic food by reading Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, available in Glenn Library. |
